The Canadian province of Manitoba announced that once it's done upgrading (to the tune of $213M) the Trans Canada Highway west of Winnipeg through to the Saskatchewan border, (which is most of the province) the speed limit will be raised from 100 km/h to 110 km/h. They also announced a similar plan for MB Highway 75, which runs from Winnipeg to the Emerson border crossing with North Dakota.
Currently the speed limit on both highways is 100 km/h except for a small section near the Saskatchewan border.

Raising the speed limit is approved activity. However, it is not guaranteed activity, because the Manitoban premier is facing a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! having about 5 of his cabinet minister resign and denounce him. If the throne speech doesn't pass a vote, then Manitoba will have an election instead of higher speed limits.

This comes as BC recently !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of rural roads to 120 km/h this past July.

Seems as though Canadian provinces are finally getting with the program, well except Ontario that has 100 km/h speed limits and a transport minister that's a damn hazard on the road.
"Chiarelli (Ontario's Minister of Transport) said there is no public ground swell to boost the speed limit. As for his driving style, he said he keeps his cruise control locked to 100 kilometres on the highways and 40 on neighbourhood roads.

to be fair, its not like anyone in ont ever drives the speed limit...going up the 400, I think I was cruising at 135 in the slowlane one day, and I was still getting past like no-bodies buisness

Bob Charelli drives the speed limit. So he says.
![]() 11/21/2014 at 07:22 |

OFC he can say that when he gets chauffeured around all day.

Welcome to the speed limits that Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have been enjoying for years. You can now go 120 Km/h and most likely not get pulled over.
Also in Maine from the border of NB to Bangor you can go 75Mph... It's glorious to go 90ish and not feel too worried about a trooper pulling you over.

Bob Charelli is a dick. When the TO Star doesn't like a liberal, I think that can be taken as confirmation :)

They should give the 407 control over it's speed limits—after all it isn't provincial property. It would make the tolls worthwhile.

I have only driven....highway 2? in New Brunswick from the QC border to Oromocto. There was like 3 cars the whole way.

that is very true.
besides I've heard that the 407 was actually designed with a 200KM speed in mind. 100km/H on a road designed for 200 just seems criminal

I'll just leave this here.

It's a moneygrab. I don't know about the 407, but the other 400-series were designed for 75-80 MPH, so 120-130 KPH.
Bearing in mind the following about the 407:
-It was built later and to a higher standard due to being finished by a private company
-It is kept up better
-It has much less traffic due to the HUGE tolls
-The traffic that stays off tends to be the hypermilers that hold everyone up.
Another thing, that I think personally should be in effect is day/night/weather limits.

I know about the traffic on 407. and a way to cheapen the toll.
or as I do, not pay it. *cough*

OK, I'm not going to ask about that last sentence. :)

Or maybe base yourself on what free countries like Germany do? Speed limits over guns is something i definitely approve of :)

140 on the 401 around Milton feels like going 100 with the number of passing cars

I agree. I have cousins in milton and every time I I'm int he area I have to bring a speed up a little because I dont want to get rear ended

I may to move to Alberta soon. Then I can have higher limits and guns.

Higher does not mean stop looking at your speedo... :)
Everywhere in Europe 130kmh is pretty much standard, it's still pretty damn slow lol

I have ungreyed you. Mostly because you called Bob a dick and that is hilarious in my mind. Welcome fellow Ontarion!

Yeah that stretch is pretty quiet, I have driven to Montreal and Ottawa a few times its getting better now. They are twinning the highway there. The Trans canada hwy from Truro, NS to Woodstock, NB (Where you turn to the I-95) is all 110, except for a small spot in Amherst, NS. Its pretty awesome.

Yeah I drove from Ottawa down to NB the one time I did it. It was an alright drive, by the time we got to NB it was like 9 pm. The stretch in between Edmunston and Riviere Du Loup is miserable though.

Driving through most of NB is miserable. There is nothing to see, its all trees.

At least it's 4 lane? It's not as desolate as northern ontario. It's about 9 hours from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste Marie, and you pass 4 towns. The biggest one is Marathon. Pop 3,500.

Jesus, that sounds terriable. I guess I can't complain about NB anymore based off of the above comment.

Hopefully I'll be making the trek soon actually. Trying to move to AB soon.

In Alberta you need to worry about rock chips on the hood and window...
